CORFU. The head of “All Together for the Corfu Environment” Spyros Neratzis announced that the voluntary recycling of clothing and footwear, which has been extremely successful, will end on 26 September.
As he explained, the Municipal Authority has completed the tender process, which is why the voluntary effort is ending.
Spyros Neratzis issued the following statement:
We started in 2019 and within three years, all together, we have managed to demonstrate the sensitivity and participation of the public in recycling and environmental issues!
With our fellow citizens’ participation and support we have shown, all together, the way to reduce the volume of waste in clothing and footwear, with amazing results.
We should congratulate the Municipal Authority which, in its effort to implement its pre-election programme, managed until the end of July 2021, to complete the tender process and become the contractor for the creation of an integrated management system for used clothing and footwear.
Remaining true to our initial position that we will end any voluntary effort once the Municipality is able to take over and, considering that a period of 60 days is more than enough time for the contractor to be put in place, we are announcing that on September 26, 2021, "All Together for the Corfu Environment' will stop recycling clothing and footwear within the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality.
The red recycling bin located outside the KEP office will be removed on Sunday 26 September.
We thank all our fellow citizens for this wonderful journey over these three years and we are confident that our Municipality will do much better than we have in providing a similar service.
At the same time, we hope that in the near future our Municipality will have the will and the capacity to also undertake the other two actions – the collection of plastic bottle caps and the utilisation of the Green Spots – that we have started with the help of our fellow citizens and other bodies!
Yours sincerely,
Spyros Neratzis
