No ferry services on Wednesday 16th - see who else will be on strike

CORFU. Protests against the new employment legislation are escalating.

The Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY) and unions are holding a 24-hour strike tomorrow, Wednesday 16 June. In its statement, ADEDY says: "We call on all workers to take part in the strike, protest gatherings and rallies that are taking place on that day throughout the country. This legislation must not be voted into law - it must be withdrawn now!"

Corfu

The Primary School Teachers' Union (SEPE) has declared that it will be taking part in the ADEDY strike in support of the workers protests against the government's employment legislation and has called on strikers to gather at the Workers' Centre at 10:00.

No ferry services

Corfu-Igoumenitsa Seamen's Union will also be taking part in the strike declared by the Panhellenic Seamen's Federation from 00:01 on Wednesday until 24:00.

Corfu Workers' Centre is supporting the strike declared by Federations and Workers' Centres throughout Greece as well as ADEDY on Wednesday 16 June - the day there will be a vote on the legislation. "We call on everyone to take part in the strike gatherings being held by the unions at 10:00 at the Workers' Centre," they announced. "Workers from all the sectors must come together on this day to in the fight to block this legislation, which, it is clear, will not accept any amendments and must be completely withdrawn."

Two strike demonstrations

Corfu Private Sector Employees' Union and Corfu Self-Employed Union have also declared their support and are calling on workers to join the two demonstrations - 10:00 at the Workers' Centre and 19:00 at Porta Riala.

The Corfu branch of the Bank Employees' Union (OTOE) has also called on members to take part in the demonstration at Porto Riala to protest "against the abominable legislation which will abolish the 8-hour working day and violates our rights."
