CORFU. The Corfu Seamen’s Union ‘Agios Spyridon’ will also participate in the strike.

The Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) has decided to declare a 24-hour nationwide strike across all categories of vessels on Saturday, February 28, 2026, on the occasion of the third anniversary “of the tragic Tempi railway accident in which 57 of our fellow human beings unjustly lost their lives, when they should have been travelling safely,” as it states.

The strike will begin at 00:01 and will end at midnight on Saturday, February 28.

The announcement states:

“The Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation and the maritime community know firsthand that strict adherence to safety rules and measures is of vital importance, and that when these are violated, the results are unfortunately tragic. There are many examples that have occurred in maritime, land, and air transport.

With this decision, seafarers pay tribute to our colleagues as well as to our fellow human beings who have lost their lives in such accidents.

At the same time, they stress that the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation will continue to intervene intensively, using all the means at its disposal, to ensure in practice everywhere that the protection of human life at sea is not merely a slogan.”

Similar strike decisions for the same day and for the same reason have begun to be adopted by trade union organisations in other sectors as well.
