Protest at Marasleio Town Hall against privatisation of cleaning services
CORFU. The workers say they are determined to continue their struggle to ensure that cleaning services remain public.
A protest is under way on Tuesday morning, January 27, outside the office of the Mayor of Central Corfu at the Marasleio building. Municipal workers, representatives of local bodies, and trade unions are in attendance as the Municipal Committee meets, with the main agenda item being the outsourcing of waste collection to a private contractor.

The protest, which began at 8:30 a.m. following a call by DAS OTA, has the backing of the Workers Centre, the regional branch of ADEDY, and numerous trade unions. Those gathered are opposing the planned outsourcing of cleaning services.
At the forefront is the President of municipal workers (OTA) trade union, Stamatís Korfiátis, who in statements stressed that this situation is not a local phenomenon but part of a broader policy being implemented by municipalities nationwide.

Mr. Korfiátis pointed out that transferring waste collection to private contractors is a central policy choice that undermines public services.
The workers say they are determined to continue their struggle to ensure that cleaning services remain public. Tensions remain high outside the meeting hall, with unions and local bodies calling for the immediate withdrawal of the item and for the service to be strengthened with permanent staff and equipment.
