Anti-war rally at Annunziata Square on Tuesday
CORFU. "The rising hostilities in the greater region could escalate further, with untold consequences for the people."
(Workers Centre) The Workers Centre strongly and unequivocally condemns the new imperialist intervention by the United States and Israel against Iran, which dangerously escalates tensions in the Middle East and threatens to plunge the peoples of the region into new, incalculable disasters.
Military operations, threats, and sanctions have nothing to do with the “security” and “stability” invoked by the imperialists. They are part of the fierce competition for control over energy resources, transportation routes, and geopolitical spheres of influence. Once again, workers and the popular strata are paying the price for imperialist plans.
The Corfu Workers Centre expresses its solidarity with the people of Iran, as well as with all the peoples of the region who are targeted by military interventions and sanctions. No government has the right to impose its interests by force, to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, and to sow destruction.
Greece’s involvement in war planning is neither “neutral” nor “formal.” The use of military infrastructure, the facilitation of troop movements, and participation in Euro-Atlantic planning make our country part of the problem rather than a force for peace.
The recent decision to close the Souda base for security reasons clearly confirms that Greece is not “out of danger.” On the contrary, the presence and operation of foreign military bases on its territory turn the country into a potential target of retaliation and directly involve it in conflicts that have nothing to do with the interests of the Greek people. Developments prove that the bases do not provide “security,” but instead entangle us more deeply in dangerous confrontations.
There must be no complacency. Assurances about “stability” and “deterrence” collapse in the face of escalating reality. Military tension in the broader region may spread, with incalculable consequences for the peoples.
The government must cease all facilitation and participation in military operations, proceed with the closure of all foreign bases, and disengage the country from dangerous imperialist plans. The Corfu Workers Centre calls on unions and workers to remain in a state of militant readiness. Let us condemn the new attack by the imperialists and our country’s involvement in these plans, which turn us into a direct target of retaliation and put our people at risk.
