CORFU. The Corfu Seamen΄s Union ‘Agios Spyridon’ is taking part in the strike.

The Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) has declared a 24-hour nationwide strike in all categories of ships on Saturday, February 28, on the third anniversary of “the tragic railway accident in Tempi, where 57 of our fellow human beings unjustly lost their lives while they should have been travelling safely,”

The strike will begin at 00:01 and end at midnight on Saturday, 28/2.

The announcement states: “The Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation and the maritime community know firsthand that compliance with safety rules and measures is of vital importance, and when these are violated, the results are unfortunately tragic. There are many examples that have occurred in sea, land, and air transport.

With this decision, seamen pay tribute to our colleagues and our fellow human beings who have lost their lives in such accidents.

At the same time, they state that the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation will continue to intervene intensively, using all the means at its disposal, to ensure in practice everywhere that the protection of human life at sea is not merely a slogan.”

Similar strike decisions for the same day and for the same reason have also begun to be taken by trade union organisations in other sectors.
