CORFU. Corfu’s municipalities are taking part in the KEDΕ protest action. ADEDY strike.

The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands will take part in the mobilisations decided by the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDΕ), involving the symbolic closure of municipalities across the country on Tuesday, 16 December, the day on which the 2026 State Budget will be voted on. At the same time, elected local government officials will also participate in a protest rally to be held outside the Hellenic Parliament on the same day at 12:00 noon.

Under the slogan “Financially Strong Municipalities, Always by the Citizen’s Side,” KEDΕ is calling for the long-overdue implementation of a substantive reform of the State and Local Government. This reform should be based on the constitutional provision for municipalities with administrative and financial autonomy, within the framework of a new, decentralised model of state governance.

Such a model would enable municipalities to provide immediate and practical solutions to the everyday problems faced by citizens, rather than perpetuating the current system, which confines local government to the role of managing a bleak and restrictive reality.

As noted by the President of KEDΕ, Lazaros Kyrizoglou, “the participation of all elected local government officials in the December 16 mobilisation outside Parliament will send a strong message of unity and determination by first-level local government to demand permanent and sustainable solutions to the major problems that have long plagued the operation of municipalities throughout the country.”

Extraordinary KEDE General Assembly on the New Code - December 17

In addition, the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor for Spatial Planning, and the head of the main opposition will participate, on the day following the mobilisation—Wednesday, 17 December—in the proceedings of the Extraordinary General Assembly, to be held at the Caravel Hotel. The Assembly will focus on “The New Local Government Code” and will take place in the presence of the political leadership of the Ministry of the Interior.
