CORFU. Protestors at Temploni landfill are marching to Bretanou Lake, which they say has a large quantity of residues from the facility.

On the occasion of World Environment Day Corfu Waste Watch is holding a protest at Temploni landfill with the slogan "We'll stop this crime".

The aim of the protest, which is taking place now, is to raise public awareness about the situation at Temploni. The organisers say that for over 40 years the waste from the whole island has been deposited there in an almost completely uncontrolled way.

"The increasing evidence of pollution in the area confirms what we all know," they say. "The pollution is way above the limit allowed and is a danger to public health. It has now been five months since the regional administration said that experts from the Demokritos Institute will come to provide exact information about the environmental damage in the area. For five months this has been stuck in red tape. Meanwhile, the invitation for tenders for the facility at the same location is proceeding which, along with the island's new landfill, will bury any hopes that residents have for the area to be restored.

"Despite this, the contracting procedure for the repair of the old cells at the landfill, which should have been completed over a year ago, is still ongoing. We are not forgetting the long-suffering facility at Lefkimmi - the burst waste bales are there to remind us of its struggle. The announcements regarding funding for transportation are not enough. A location has to be found for where it will end up."

This morning's protest will include a march to Bretanou Lake, where a large quantity of residues from the facility ends up.

A number of associations, groups, organisations and political parties are taking part in the protest.
