CORFU. In the Phaeces and Paleokatritsa districts.

(Central Corfu Municipality) Regarding the recent issue with waste collection over the past few days in the districts of Phaeces and Paleokastritsa, the Municipality has announced the following:

1. The responsible Service, in light of the increased demands of the summer tourist season, announced in a timely way the recruitment of 49 personnel positions (drivers and workers). Only twenty individuals responded, of whom four were already working in the same service under previous contracts. Among the twenty, not a single one was a driver, and only four were actually available for waste collection!

2. As a result, the cleaning service once again found itself unable to meet the season's increased demands. Therefore, the Municipality activated its provision for a small (both in scope and scale) extension of the active contract with the company ENACT.

3. For this contract extension, the Municipality’s Financial Service deemed it necessary to seek approval from the Court of Audit. The extension proposal was submitted to the Court on May 30, 2025, but has not yet been reviewed or approved.

4. This pending approval coincided with the injury of one employee and illness of three others in the service, with no possibility for replacement, leading to the unfortunate consequences now visible and damaging to the image of both the area and the island.

5. In light of this impasse, the Mayor contacted the Court of Audit last Thursday, June 19, and the Court responded to his formal request by placing the matter on the agenda of its first upcoming session, scheduled for Tuesday, June 24.

While awaiting approval—which is anticipated—for the minor (of limited significance) extension of the contract with ENACT, every objectively possible effort is being made to manage the situation, so that normal operations of the waste collection service can resume immediately afterward.
