Dirt road transformed in Gouvia!

CORFU. Until recently it was a prime example of how a road should not be - as regards public space and respect for the environment.

Yet another creditworthy initiative from volunteers and Cultural Society members in Corfu as regards public conscientiousness in the effort to respect the environment and improve people's everyday lives.

Members of Gouvia Cultural Society, along with the help of several volunteers, managed to transform a road which, until recently, was a prime example of how a road should not be - as regards public space and respect for the environment.

Piles of rubbish, rubble and other abandoned large objects had created what was an 'unofficial' rubbish tip close to the Gouvia Marina.

The road has now been completely transformed and is an example of what communities can achieve if there is a will, a vision, planning and hard work.

These are some of the photos on the Gouvia Cultural Society Page which give hope that waste management in Corfu - on an individual and not necessarily local authority level - can improve on the present situation.

Statement from Society members:

"A road, which until recently was full of rubbish and rubble, has now become pleasantly unrecognisable.

Yesterday and today, on the initiative of Ashley Pallis - the 'guardian' of our Green Spot and with the help of several volunteers, the road was completely cleared of rubbish, rubble, grass, earth, branches etc.

Those who know the area can easily recognise the difference."

The truth of the matter is that Cultural Societies, community councils and various voluntary groups have been organising themselves for quite a time now and under the prevailing circumstances have been performing miracles with the waste problem and completely changing the negative image that previously existed.

In Gouvia the Society President Marinos Mikalef has been working ceaselessly along with the other active members in the area to find ways of improving the everyday conditions in the area.

Since last May, following a request to the local authority, two press containers have been placed in the district and the Green Spot, managed by Ashley Pallis, has been operating smoothly. The next goal is to maintain high standards of cleanliness in the district and to set up an area for recycling and sorting at source with as many streams as possible available (paper, plastic, glass etc.).
