CORFU. The Electricity Company (DEI) won΄t provide electricity for the new traffic lights in Solari - it says the Regional Administration owes it 50,000 Euros!
To find out whether what the Electricity Company claims is true or not all the Regional bills are being examined so that the contracted work can be completed. The final stage of the work is the placement and operation of the traffic lights at the junctions and the road markings which will improve the flow of traffic and prevent parking at the roadside - which has been taking up one of the lanes.
The other work still to be completed is to finish the pedestrian crossings - which is to be undertaken by another contractor, providing the necessary funding is assured.
The Traffic Police has said that the road surfacing work has already reduced the number of accidents - serious and minor. Local businesses agree with this assessment but claim that when the traffic lights start operating there will be heavy congestion - creating even more problems than there were before! Taxi drivers travelling north to south and vice versa often use the road along the river! The need for a bypass round the town is quite clear.
