CORFU. With the participation of all rescue services including Fire, Ambulance and Police.

There was a planned practice exercise at Corfu 'Ioannis Capodistrias' Airport on Thursday afternoon.

The exercise, conducted by Fraport Greece, covered aircraft evacuation procedures and included all the rescue services such as Fire, Ambulance and Police. It was carried out at a distance from the main building and didn't hamper the normal operation of the airport.

The procedure takes between 40 and 60 minutes and according to Fraport Communications Manager Yiannis Papazoglou, the exercise covers the case of an aircraft which has landed but, for whatever reason, has not been able to proceed normally and passengers need to be evacuated.

"These exercises aim to improve coordination in case of a real incident. We have conducted other exercises in the past, in Corfu and elsewhere, and table-top exercises with Fraport personnel," Mr. Papazoglou told Enimerosi.

The passengers taking part in the exercises are role-players and the rescue procedure is timed and passengers separated according to the degree of injury which they would have suffered in a real incident. The purpose of the exercise is to ensure readiness for a real life incident.
