CORFU. It΄s been les than two years since Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities placed information panels in town to display the island΄s medieval fortifications.

At the weekend the support for the information panel outside the Regional Administration building was broken by person or persons unknown. It is not yet known if it was an act of vandalism - deliberate, in other words - or an accident. The support, however, is made of stainless steel, which can stand the passage of time and 'attacks' from people.

Nevertheless, the attirude of some people to public property has been seen in the past. Examples of this are the street lamps in the Upper Square, graffiti on the Municipal Theatre and the Ionian Islands Monument, damage to the backstage at the Rena Vlachopoulou Theatre at Mon Repos etc.

Medieval fortifications information panels

The display panels give historical information about the whole Old Town wall as well as about the specific location of the panel. This particular panel is about the 'Agios Athanasios Plateau' between the ramparts of Sarantari and Raimondo. It gets its name from the Church of St. Athanasios which used to be located in the area. Its crescent-shaped edge protected the low-level squares with cannons. The north-west square protects the Royal Gate (Porta Reale) which was nearby.
