CORFU. A roadblock was set up early this morning on the access road to Lefkimmi landfill to stop lorries with waste bales from Temploni from entering.

The roadblock was built with pallets which were then set alight. The police called the Fire Service who were able to extinguish the fire. There were no incidents and no arrests were made.

Prior to this a fire broke out in a rubbish bin at 4 in the morning as well as a small fire in long grass at 10pm last night.

Yesterday, Thursday 28th, the first transportation of waste bales to the facility was carried out with tight security measures. Escorted by police cars and riot police vans, a convoy of lorries carried thousands of tons of waste bales from the oversaturated Temploni landfill to Lefkimmi landfill.

There is a strong riot police in the area as well as a police helicopter flying overhead.
