Renovations to Corfu Capodistrias Airport – 2021 deadline

ATHENS. The Fraport Greece managing director, Alexander Zinell, spoke to journalists about Corfu and the other Ionian Island airports.

All the work at the 14 regional airports will be completed between 2019 and 2021. This is what Alexander Zinell, managing director of Fraport Greece, told journalists at a meeting to present the time schedule for the renovations and improvements at the 14 airports. He said that the work would be carried out whilst the airports were still in operation without impeding the operation and with the safety and security of passengers as the prime consideration.

He also talked about passenger traffic, which has seen an increase of 11.1% in the first five months of the year – 19.8% increase in international flights and 1.09% decrease in domestic flights.

Mr. Zinell said that they are extending the terminal at Corfu Capodistrias Airport by 10,000 sq.m., adding 7,500 sq.m. to the apron area and remodelling the existing terminal. They are also carrying out other reorganizational and renovation work, extensive repairs, complete cleaning, re-painting and new signage. The total budget is approximately 36m Euros.

In Zakynthos they are constructing a new safety and storage station and a building for the transformers and generators. They are also making improvements to the runway, taxiway and apron area. The total budget is 13.7m Euros.

In Cephalonia the old terminal is being demolished and a new one being built in its place with an area of 11,000 sq.m. Operations are being transferred gradually from the old to the new terminal according to progress. New safety and storage stations are also being built and refurbishment of the runway and taxiway is being carried out. The full length of the landing runway is being successfully renovated. The total budget is just under 24m Euros.

Aktion is one of the smallest airports in the country. The 7,000 sq.m. terminal is being extended by 2,500 sq.m. A new safety and storage station is being constructed and the biological treatment system upgraded. There will be completely new signage and markings on the landing runway and airside pavement. The total budget is 9m Euros.
