CORFU. The heavy downpour once again exposed the vulnerable points in the road network, while the continuous lightning strikes prevented three flights from landing at Corfu Airport.

The strong storm that hit Corfu on Tuesday evening, 15 September, bringing torrential rain and particularly intense lightning activity, left problems mainly on the road network and disruption to air traffic in its wake.

The large amount of rain that fell within a short period caused water to accumulate and led to flooding on roads, with the most serious conditions reported in the general airport area. The roads around the airport were flooded, and vehicle traffic was difficult for a period of time.

The storm also affected airport operations. Three international flights due to land in Corfu shortly before 19:00 were unable to approach safely because of the intense electrical activity. They were flights from Prague, Hamburg and Riga — not Düsseldorf, as was initially reported in some accounts.

According to flight data cited by Greek City Times, the aircraft from Prague and Hamburg were eventually diverted to Aktion Airport, while the flight from Riga landed in Brindisi.

The picture emerging so far, therefore, is of a short but extremely intense storm that once again tested the known vulnerable points of the road network, without — based on the information currently available — causing damage on the scale of previous severe weather events.
