CORFU. Stefanos Gikas: "With the completion of the recruitments already underway, our hospital will cover most of the shortages in medical and nursing staff".

Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas met with the new Corfu Hospital Director Manto Egglezopoulou.

In their first meeting after the new Director took up her duties they discussed issues related to the smooth operation of the hospital, such as the shortages of medical and nursing staff and the permanent staff positions that have already been advertised. In the second half of 2022, the positions for 12 permanent and 14 auxiliary doctors were advertised, while 52 permanent nurses will be recruited soon.

Last week the Ministry of Health approved the recruitment of 8 more permanent doctors of the National Health System - important specialties to further strengthen the Corfu Hospital. Thus, the new advertisement will include the permanent positions of 2 pathologists, 2 cardiologists, 2 radiologists, 1 haematologist/biopathologist and 1 psychiatrist, as well as 1 cardiologist for the Paxos Health Centre and 1 general fractitioner/family doctor at the Agios Markos Health Centre.

After the meeting the MP made the following statement:

"I visited Ms. Egglezopoulou today - one month after she took up her duties - and we had an in-depth discussion on the issues of our hospital.

First of all, I would like to point out that, admittedly, the peace that had been disturbed in the past in the workplace has been restored. The new Director is of course dealing with organisational issues, perhaps first of all the recruitment of new medical and nursing staff following the new advertisements announced by our government. Thus, she is taking care of the re-advertisement of the 6 vacant medical positions from last year's advertisements.

She is also promoting the supply of €3.1m medical equipment from the ESPA programme, as well as issues related to the hospital's real estate.

With the completion of the very important recruitments that are already underway, our hospital will cover most of the shortages that have been recorded.

I have stated that I will assist the administration in its efforts to improve the operation of our hospital."
