Ordeal for young patient, 13, to get to Athens Children΄s Hospital
CORFU. The local Ekkinisi party condemns the hours-long delay in transferring the young boy, whose life was in danger, to the Athens hospital.
"On Thursday 12 January there was another incident confirming that the health of Corfu residents is at risk," declared the local Ekkinisi party.
In the party's statement they say that the 13-year-old patient had to be airlifted to Athens but what happened eventually was that he had to be taken by sea to Igoumenitsa, then by ambulance to Ioannina and from there he was flown to Athens and taken to the Children's Hospital.
"A request was made at 15:00 for him to be airlifted from Corfu and the response was that this couldn't happen as helicopter flights are only allowed up to 17:00. The incident brings to mind the case of 6-year-old Thomas from Grevena who passed away at Patras Hospital as it was the nearest ICU.
The Corfu government MP had promised on 22 December that emergency air transfers of patients would be carried out as normal during the time that work was being done at Corfu Airport.
Ekkinisi will continue its fight for Corfu to have the health services the islanders have a right to."
