Skripero pupils collaborating with Ionian University Tourism Department in innovative sustainable tourism workshop

CORFU. Pupils at Skripero Junior High and High School will be taking part in an innovative workshop with the Ionian University Department of Tourism.
The Ionian University Department of Tourism is giving Skripero Junior High and High School pupils the opportunity to express their views on the extremely topical issue of Corfu as a sustainable tourist destination in an innovative project.
The workshop will take place at the school on Thursday 15 December with 25 2nd year high school pupils learning the basic facts about sustainable tourism and playing active roles in the project.
The initiative for the project came from school teacher Konstantinos Kostalis and Tourism Department assistant professor Sofia Karampela with the support of PhD candidate Aigli Koliotasi.

Role play
The pupils will attempt to simulate the planning, policy and management of a coastal area through role play based on the community, economy and environment. Each of the five groups will be given a specific role.
The groups will be given the roles of residents, investors, tourism professionals, the local authority and an environmental NGO. The case study they will be given to work on will be Erimitis - an investment which has produced many varying reactions.
"This process will allow the pupils, through a system of participation, to learn the basic principles of sustainability taking into account the community, the economy and the environment," Ms. Karampela told Enimerosi. "The aim is for them to learn how to work together."
Preparation
The pupils' preparation has already begun with the collection of necessary material to allow them to put forward their arguments during the workshop. "A workshop on the development of a sustainable tourist destination at a Corfu school is undoubtedly a matter of great significance," said Mr. Kostalis. "The pupils are extremely excited about it."
The second part of the workshop involves a digital game simulating a coastal area where the pupils will be asked to make an investment taking into account all the parameters from the first part of the workshop.
Channel of communication
Ms. Karampela pointed out that this is the first time that the project is being undertaken and there is a desire to continue with this channel of communication between the Tourism Department and the academic community and other schools.
