CORFU. The MP said that the extra funding is the result of successful negotiations between the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and the European Commission, in cooperation with the Ministry of Development and the Ministry for Infrastructure and Transport.

Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas met today with the Maritime Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis following an invitation from the latter.

Mr. Plakiotakis informed the MP about the very important development of securing extra funding for the €9.5-million construction project of Othoni Port.

This funding is from the ESPA Transport Programme of the 2021-2027 programming period, which as Mr. Plakiotakis explained, will be added to the €18 million that had been secured during the Minister's visit to Corfu last November.

The MP said that the extra funding is the result of successful negotiations between the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and the European Commission, in cooperation with the Ministry of Development and the Ministry for Infrastructure and Transport.

After the meeting Mr. Gikas stated the following:

"With the Maritime Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis and his partners, we set specific goals for the upgrading of Corfu ports in cooperation with the local authorities, the Corfu Port Authority's management and the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund, where necessary. Our plan, which follows the new National Strategy for the Integrated Maritime Policy for Insular Territory and was our pre-election promise, is being implemented after many years of inactivity.

Thus today, following the efforts of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, we are happy to announce that we secured €9.5 million for the Othoni Port project, a long-awaited project, which is now fully mature and can be put out to tender in the near future.

This extremely important development for Othoni and the Diapontia Islands, will be added to the announcements we made last November in Corfu regarding the funding for the construction of the new ports in Mathraki and Agios Stefanos Avliotes.

We are very pleased that the creation of a network of 4 modern ports in an extremely important island region, such as that of the Diapontia Islands, is finally being implemented. And, of course, I am referring to the three new ports - the Agios Stefanos Avliotes Port in North Corfu, which will serve the Diapontia Islands, the Mathraki Port and the Othoni Port, with Erikousa, of course, already having a very good port infrastructure. I should stress that the funds for the 3 ports are exceeding €25.5 million!

I would like to thank once again the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and, of course, the Maritime Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis for treating the Diapontia Islands, which have great geopolitical value and many peculiarities, with great care, realism and effectiveness.

It goes without saying that the upgrading of the ports and ferry connections in Corfu are linked to our country's development and prosperity, the improvement of the citizens' everyday life and is adding value to the whole country.”
