CORFU. The Regional Governor met with the General Hospital Director and staff representatives in order to discuss about a mix of incentives to staff the Corfu General Hospital and Corfu΄s inclusion in the arid areas for easier recruitment of staff.

The Ionian Islands Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa met on Monday 17 January with the Deputy Regional Governor for Public Health and Welfare Melita Andrioti, with the General Hospital Director Leonidas Roubatis and the representatives of the unions of the Corfu General Hospital employees to discuss the need for the Ministry of Health to create the right mix of incentives, in order to recruit medical and other staff for the Corfu General Hospital. Also present at the meeting were the President of the Corfu Doctors’ Union Petros Argitis, the Corfu Doctors’ Union Secretary Giorgos Daglas and the President of the Psychiatric Sector Employees Union Tasos Papatsoris.

During the meeting with Leonidas Roubatis, the Ionian Islands Region Governor emphasised the need to increase the hospital's staff in all sectors, especially the medical one.

They exchanged views and agreed on the form that the state incentives should take in order to attract staff to the General Hospital, as it is clear that these incentives should not only be financial, but they should also have to do with the doctors’ career development, to ensure that they will be staying in the place where they are employed, etc.

As it was mentioned at the meeting, the local authorities have the opportunity to offer their support in many ways, as the Ionian Islands Region is already doing by bearing part of the doctors' cost of living – something that the Municipalities should also do.

It was also pointed out that there should be pressure to include Corfu in the arid areas, in order to make it easier to attract staff for the hospital. It was stressed that the Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa has already sent a personal letter to the Health Minister.

The Regional Governor noted that Corfu’s disadvantage in attracting staff for the hospital, precisely because it is an island, becomes obvious when we compare it with Lefkada and its hospital, where staffing it is easier due to the accessibility and interconnection with mainland Greece.

The Regional Governor asked the General Hospital Director for an assessment of how the possibility of recruiting auxiliary staff through the NSRF is exploited, as the Corfu General Hospital has not recruited auxiliary medical staff, but only other staff, through this programme, unlike other hospitals in the Ionian Islands. Thus, this should be pointed out to the Ministry of Health and the 6th Health Region, which includes Ionian Islands Region, in order to increase the staff in Corfu General Hospital.

The possibility of strengthening and upgrading the General Hospital’s Psychiatric Clinic was also discussed at the meeting.

The Ionian Islands Regional Governor once again congratulated the hospital’s management and employees for the way the hospital is responding to health needs, as well as for the effort that everyone is making during the difficult conditions created by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as for the operation of the vaccination centre.
