CORFU. A solution has finally been found for the huge problem of the management of stray animals throughout the island.

The Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality is one step closer to finding a permanent solution for the management of stray animals, as the project for the ‘Construction, repair, maintenance and equipment of facilities for the stray animal shelter, repair of the building and landscaping of the surrounding area’, with a budget of €188,700, has been put out to tender.

Tenders from potential contractors can be submitted until Friday 21 January and will be available online on Tuesday 25 January. The shelter is expected to provide a solution to the huge problem of the management of stray animals throughout the island, the number of which is increasing day by day, mainly due to their abandonment by their owners.

According to the original plan, the facility will operate as an inter-municipal animal shelter. However, the other two Municipalities are also given the opportunity to have their own shelters, if they wish to, through programmes such as ‘Philodimos’, with the aim of providing even greater accommodation for stray animals.

Where it will be created

The shelter will be created in Agios Georgios Vitalades in Lakones, Paleokastritsa, on a property owned by the Municipality. After the necessary work is done, the existing building will be used for the housing of the administrative department and the clinic, where animals will receive treatment, while the surrounding area will be used for their accommodation. The project is funded by the ‘Philodimos II’ programme and is included in Central Corfu Municipality’s budget.

The animal shelter

The animal shelter will have a capacity to accommodate up to 40 stray animals and it will be a place of temporary accommodation for them with a view to their adoption. If they do not get adopted, they will be returned to their natural environment.

It should be noted that from May 2020 to date, through the 4th stray animal management scheme and according to the service contract with a private veterinarian, 276 stray dogs have been sterilised. At the same time, with the valuable cooperation of animal welfare volunteers, 132 animals were adopted in one year.
