CORFU. To date 276 stray dogs have been sterilised and with the collaboration of volunteers 132 animals have been adopted over the last year.
Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality has a programme for the care of stray animals. The aim of the programme is, on the one hand, to gradually reduce the number of strays through sterilisation, chipping, keeping a record and adoption and, on the other, their well-being by ensuring veterinary care where necessary and provision of food, water and protection.
The fourth cycle of the programme was recently completed successfully with increased sterilisation and adoption, according to the contract with a private veterinarian. To date 276 stray dogs have been sterilised and with the valuable assistance of volunteers 132 animals have been adopted over the last year.
An extensive network has been developed in the municipality with 25 feeding and watering spots for dogs and cats to ensure their well-being.
The number of feeding spots for cats has increased with new locations in Vlacherna Monastery, Kontra Fossa, Karteria, Alykes Potamos (municipal beach), municipal cemetery and Villa Petsali.
Depending on the needs in each area, the network is maintained on a daily basis with dried food and water by a team of municipal employees, which has recently been created, with food purchased by the municipality for this purpose.
The Deputy Mayor responsible for the programme Chrysoula Tombrou said: "Taking into account the ongoing needs for the care of stray animals, the local authority is proceeding with the immediate implementation of a new programme which will include cats. Plans are also being drawn up for the construction of a shelter and clinic for stray animals, given that the well-being of animals is directly connected with public health and a civilised society."
