CORFU. "The waste was taken into the Kozani facility," says Meropi Ydraiou. "We didn΄t accept it as we weren΄t ready," says DIADYMA facility managing director. What΄s happening with the waste baler.
Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality and the Kozani waste management facility (DIADYMA) gave statements to Enimerosi regarding Saturday's first shipment of waste from Corfu that were diametrically opposed.
DIADYMA Managing Director Dimosthenis Mavridis told Enimerosi that the 150 tons of waste that were loaded at Corfu Port early on Saturday morning to be taken to Kozani were never taken into the facility! Mr. Mavridis explained that there procedures that still haven't been completed in order for Kozani Waste Management Facility to be in a position to accept the Corfu waste.
So what are these procedures? According to Mr. Mavridis, a contract needs to be signed with the company that operates the facility. They also need to have the documents showing that the waste transportation is in line with very strict specifications and European regulations. In other words, which vehicles will be bring the waste to Kozani, their specifications and number plates, what they are transporting etc.
The DIADYMA Managing Director pointed out to Enimerosi that "a sufficient period of time is required in order for the facility to be ready to accept the Corfu waste. Workers need to be recruited to cover an extra shift and they need to be trained and adopt to various duties."
"I reckon," said Mr. Mavridis, "that we will be ready to start accepting Corfu's waste by the end of next week. We are the ones that will tell Corfu when it can send its waste."
So what happened to the 150 tons of waste that was loaded at Corfu Port early on Saturday morning and sailed for Igoumentisa? Was it received at the Kozani facility to be processed? Did it return to Corfu?
"We didn't accept any waste. We couldn't accept it due to the fact that the procedures I mentioned hadn't been completed. That's what I say - I can't know what happened to the waste.." was the answer we got from Dimosthenis Mavridis.

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor and FODSA President Meropi Ydraiou gave a different version to Enimerosi.
Meropi Ydraiou didn't hide her annoyance at everything that had been said and insisted that the waste sent to Kozani had been accepted at the facility without any problems.
She added that she herself will be going to Kozani to take care of some details with DIADYMA - which would probably already have happened if the Prime Minister hadn't come to Corfu this weekend.
The Mayor also told Enimerosi that the contract with the company operating the waste baler at Temploni is still in force until 21 July - next Tuesday.
The contract will not be renewed as there is no need for new waste to be baled - this will be done by DIADYMA at the Kozani facility (the facility will not accept any waste more than three days old).
However, the contractor wants to do the work he is being paid for until next week, which creates a problem in the whole procedure. Ms. Ydraiou says that this problem will be solved as the contractor will be asked to remove his equipment once the contract is completed thus creating the necessary space for the waste to be loaded onto the Enact containers ready to be taken to the port.
Unanimous decision from DIADYMA Board
Enimerosi spoke with the Mayor of Grevena Giorgos Dastamanis, who is a member of the DIADYMA Board.
From what Mr. Dastamanis said, the Corfu waste did, in fact, get to the Kozani facility and was accepted. So the rubbish didn't get lost on the way there!
In order for the facility to accept the waste, however, the DIADYMA Board had to hold a meeting and decide (unanimously) that the first containers with 150 tons of waste could be accepted. The amount could be handled by the personnel but board approval was necessary as a formality.
Nevertheless, the transportation of waste will not continue until the end of July or early August, according to the Grevena Mayor, when all the necessary procedures have been completed - signing of contracts, recruitment of personnel etc.
This was confirmed to Enimerosi by Meropi Ydraiou, who will go to Kozani in the coming days for this reason.
