CORFU. Enimerosi was at the stadium yesterday evening (Monday 25 May) to see the young Corfu triple jumper Spyridoula Karydi in training.

Enimerosi spoke with Spyridoula and her coach Pavlos Skordilis.

Pavlos Skordilis told us how much the lockdown had affected the young athlete's training and said that she was aiming high this year following a series of successful indoor competitions. She had been ready to start preparing for three major competitions before the outbreak of the pandemic, the most important of which was the World Under-20 Championship, where, because she has the best performance in the world, she had been hoping to win medal.

He said this was followed by the cancellation of this year's Olympics, where the main goal was to participate, and the European Championships that were to have taken place in Paris at the end of August.

All of this led to a change in her training programme, her coach said, with more emphasis being put on physical condition and training taking place away from the stadium for over two months.

For the remainder of the year Spyridoula will concentrate on taking part in domestic competitions that are allowed by SEGAS (Greek Athletics Association), such as the National Championships and the Under 20 Championships as well as the Balkan Championships and possible some European competitions.

Pavlos Skordilis talked about the coming year, which will be very important as there will be a lot of major competitions - including the Olympics, of course - and there will also be the question of how Spyridoula will be able to combine both athletics and her studies.

Spyridoula herself talked about her present condition and said that physically she wasn't at her best as she had been away from training for such a long time due to the lockdown. Nevertheless, she did the best she could by herself to keep herself in good condition.

She went on to say that she has been back at the stadium for three weeks now and is making efforts to get back to her previous high standards. With regard to the Olympics, she believes it is possible for her to qualify but what she is most interested in is to gain the experience of taking part in the Olympics. If she goes, she said, she will give the 'battle of her life' and only good can come from it.
