"There΄s no more time to lose," Minister tells Mayor

CORFU. There has been no mention, at least so far, of the wider area of Palaiopolis or the Desyllas factory. The mayor raised the issue of restoring the building next to the Menecrates monument.
She didn’t say it in this way, exactly, but the impression given was that this is precisely what she meant: “for the time is near.” This is a phrase from the Book of Revelation, which in this case refers to the need for action in the old town—at least for those responsibilities that fall under the jurisdiction of the Municipality.
The Minister of Culture pointed out that two major projects are progressing on her end: the stabilisation of the rocky slopes leading to the cross of the Old Fortress, and the bastion of the Seven Winds at the acropolis of the New Fortress.
The programme for the old town, as is well known, was approved in 2007, when it was included in the list of World Heritage Sites. However, it was updated in 2022.
Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, referred to the need to utilise the Management Organisation for the old town, while she also announced that the study for the restoration of the British hospital inside the Old Fortress is expected to be completed about a year from now. This will allow the cost to be assessed, funding sources to be identified, and a financing plan for the works to be put together.
Speaking about the Achilleion Palace, she reiterated that it falls under the responsibility of the Public Properties Company, without offering any further details.
The mayor requested the restoration of the building next to the Menecrates monument on Kyprou Street, and received the response that the ministry has its priorities but that national funding sources will be sought for it.
