Local associations raise concerns about noise pollution and violations of public space in Old Town
CORFU. They are calling for immediate checks on music and outdoor seating – ‘Responsibility cannot be shifted onto residents.’
With the start of the tourist season, problems of noise pollution, exceeding the permitted times for music, and the illegal occupation of public space in the town centre are intensifying once again, according to a complaint by the Inter-Association Committee of Cultural and Environmental Organisations.
According to the statement, entertainment venues in the Old Town are systematically exceeding permitted noise levels and music operating hours, while outdoor seating is expanding uncontrollably, even into areas where it was not allowed in previous years.
The associations are calling on the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands to ensure compliance with the law by enforcing checks on permits for both music and outdoor seating. As they point out, the responsibility for enforcement cannot be shifted onto residents through complaints or apps, nor deferred to the future operation of a municipal police force.
Particular concern is expressed over safety issues, as the uncontrolled expansion of outdoor seating obstructs access for emergency vehicles, putting lives and property at risk. At the same time, the daily deterioration in quality of life for both permanent residents and visitors is highlighted.
The Inter-Association Committee is calling on the competent authorities to carry out immediate and substantial inspections to ensure the orderly functioning of the town in light of increased tourist traffic.
Corfu Inter-Association Committee of Cultural and Environmental Associations is a joint initiative of local community bodies and consists of the following associations:
- San Giacomo Cultural Association
- Halikiopoulos Lagoon Cultural and Environmental Association
- Garitsa “To Alsos” Cultural Association
- Corfu Environmental Protection Association
- Friends of Vidos
- Association of Permanent Residents of Corfu Old Town
- “Agios Spyridon Kotsela” Cultural Association
It is a collaborative network of associations with the shared goal of protecting quality of life, the cultural character, and the environment of the town.
