CORFU. All business owners and managers who have not obtained the required permit for the use of public space are called upon to immediately take the necessary steps to obtain it.

An announcement was issued by Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality Local Economy Directorate regarding significant increases in fines for unauthorised use of public spaces.

The announcement reads:

"Professionals operating catering, tourism, and commercial establishments are hereby informed that, based on Article 31 of Law 5143/2024 (Government Gazette A’/161/11-10-2024), titled ‘Increase of fines for unauthorised use of public spaces...’, significantly higher fines and stricter penalties are now in effect for violations.

For this reason, all business owners and managers who have not obtained the required permit for the use of public space are urged to immediately take the necessary steps to obtain it. Furthermore, we stress the importance of strictly adhering to the terms of the issued permits and refraining from occupying areas beyond those authorised.

It is noted that inspections by the Inspection Unit are already in full progress.

The severity of the new fines is illustrated by two recent violations involving lack of a public space use permit, detected during inspections:

  • In the first case, a fine was imposed which, under the new legislation, amounted to €90,000.

  • In another establishment, the fine imposed amounted to €21,000.

Immediate compliance is imperative to avoid adverse consequences.
