Temploni landfill - fire brought under control
CORFU. Those with respiratory problems should consult their doctor and keep their windows closed.
Firefighting efforts are ongoing for the blaze that started on Thursday evening in the bulky waste area of the Tembloni landfill, with the immediate mobilisation of the Fire Department and aerial units. The firefighting operation includes the participation of the Civil Protection services of both the Municipality and the Region, water trucks, local residents, as well as groups such as Corfu MX Park – ALMKE. Thick black smoke has covered the area, and the atmosphere is particularly suffocating.
Deputy Mayor Spyros Galanis, who is also a doctor, was present at the scene and advises those with respiratory problems to consult their doctor and to keep their windows closed.
According to the Regional Fire Service Commander, as of 6:40pm, the fire has been contained within the landfill site, although it had initially spread to surrounding areas.
