Annunziata restoration complete after 5 years work on bell tower

After five years of restoration work, the protective metal sheets were removed on Friday morning, revealing what remains of the once-Catholic urban monastery of Evangelistria – Annunziata, which was built in 1389 and destroyed by German bombings in 1943.
There were also the remains of those who fell in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 at the site. The project was funded by the ESPA 2014–2020 Programme, and its progress was overseen by the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities and its director, Tenia Rigakou.
