"I know 10 Corfu painters" at 4th Experimental Primary School

CORFU. The initiative of the Corfu Art Gallery began in 2021, during a time when the pandemic restricted children΄s visits to museums and cultural spaces.
(4th Experimental Primary School) The Corfu "Athenagorio" 4th Experimental Primary School, in collaboration with the Corfu Art Gallery, is hosting a new permanent exhibition titled "I Know 10 Corfu Painters" on its premises. The exhibition features ten copies of works by renowned Corfu artists from the Gallery’s collection, aiming to familiarise pupils with the local arts heritage.
The Corfu Art Gallery's initiative began in 2021, during a time when the pandemic limited children's visits to museums and cultural spaces. The first exhibition highlighted the importance of art in the educational process. This initiative continues to grow, strengthening children's connection to art and local cultural traditions.
The exhibition aims to bring children into direct contact with works of art, helping them discover Corfu’s creative heritage. The selected works were chosen based on their educational and aesthetic value, making them accessible and understandable for children while maintaining their artistic quality. Through this process, pupils become familiar with the style and technique of the artists, gradually learning to recognise their distinctive characteristics.
The artists featured in the second phase of the initiative are:
- Kostas Grammenos (1936–2021)
- Tzinos Dimitratos (1943–2021)
- Gerasimos Zervos (1933–2021)
- Spyros Merkouris (1926–2016)
- Ioannis Metallinos (1944–2022)
- Markos Banos (1957–2024)
- Maria Neglia-Trousa (1956–2024)
- Agis Xomeritakis (1921–2016)
- Stefanos Sgouros (1924–2017)
- Dimitris Sofianos (1944–2021)
The principal and teachers of the school express their heartfelt gratitude:
- To the Corfu Art Gallery and its founder, Michail Aggelos Vradis, for the donation, reproduction, and framing of the artworks.
- To the artist Aspasia Sigourakou for her contribution to the implementation of the initiative.
- To Elvira Metallinou, graphic designer, publisher, and member of the Gallery’s Artistic Committee, for her invaluable support.
Art belongs to everyone. It is our duty to bring it closer to children so that it becomes part of their daily lives and a source of inspiration. The school remains open to collaborations with cultural institutions, contributing to the promotion and preservation of local cultural heritage.
