Laodamas takes part in start of Corfu Carnival period

CORFU. The group will also participate in the International Dance and Music Festival in Ohrid.
Invited by WOFA (World Festival Association) to the annual International Dance and Music Festival, Laodamas, in collaboration with the Kavalouri Cultural Society, will visit Ohrid, North Macedonia, with a large delegation from Thursday, February 20, to Sunday, February 23.
They are the only representatives of Greece at a festival that brings together dozens of music and dance ensembles from around the world.
The festival's goal, according to the organisers, is to "build bridges of culture and art among nations and bring cultures closer through music, song, dance and traditional attire." The local Municipality of Ohrid is a co-organiser of the event.
A Traditional Touch at the Carnival Opening
For the opening of the Carnival, Laodamas, in collaboration with the Kavalouri dance group, presented dances, songs, and cultural performances from Corfu and the rest of Greece at Annunziata Square on Sunday morning, February 16.
"Staying true to our 40-year journey in culture and tradition, we continue to cultivate, showcase, and spread our local heritage," says one of the founders of Laodamas, Mr. Nikos Perros. He adds:
"The Carnival season is a wonderful and cheerful opportunity where each region, town and village has its own traditions and customs, many of which have fortunately been preserved to this day. In Corfu, we have a treasure trove of Carnival customs, thanks to the extensive research of Dimitris Kantas, alongside the pioneering studies and writings of Odysseas Klimis. Carnival, as a tradition, is deeply rooted in antiquity, carrying a sense of ritualism that still thrives in many parts of Greece—with wine, ecstatic dancing, bold humour, and the satire found in many of its songs."
