Blessing of the Waters for Epiphany
CORFU. Epiphany was celebrated today with the Blessing of the Waters.
At the Old Port, the Blessing of the Waters took place once again this year on Monday, January 6th, where a large crowd gathered to watch the brave divers who dove to retrieve the Cross.
The Divine Liturgy was first held at the Metropolitan Church, followed by a procession to Cafe Yiali. Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontia Islands, then performed the Blessing of the Waters with the immersion of the Holy Cross into the sea, commemorating the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan by Saint John the Baptist.
Alexandros Ioannidis retrieved the Cross, and, proud of his achievement, he wished everyone health and happiness. The Archbishop rewarded him with a gold cross.
