Awareness campaign for breast cancer by Corfu Health Centre
CORFU. Since the cancer is considered treatable if detected early and addressed at an early stage, the Breast Cancer Prevention Programme ΄Fofi Gennimata΄ is being implemented on a wide scale in Greece.
October has been internationally established as the month for prevention, awareness, and sensitisation about breast cancer. The 6th Regional Health Authority, under the coordination of the Ministry of Health, is participating in the global campaign to raise public awareness of breast cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women.
Since the cancer is considered treatable if detected early and addressed at an early stage, the Breast Cancer Prevention Programme 'Fofi Gennimata' is being implemented on a wide scale in Greece. This programme targets 1.8 million women aged 45 to 74. To better inform eligible women and the public about the programme, a website has been created at https://mastografia.gov.gr/, offering relevant information.
In Corfu Town, the Corfu Health Centre will carry out an awareness campaign for the general public at the Gynaecology Clinic, open to women of all ages, dedicated to breast cancer prevention.
The campaign started on Monday, October 21, and will continue until Friday, October 25. Additionally, from Tuesday, October 29, to Wednesday, October 30, between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm, breast clinical examinations will be performed, and prescriptions for mammogram referrals will be issued.
Early diagnosis is the cornerstone of increasing the likelihood of a full recovery. Preventive screening ensures early detection at an initial stage of cancer, meaning before symptoms appear, and includes the following:
- From the age of 20 and above, breast self-examinations once a month.
- An annual clinical examination by a specialised surgeon or gynaecologist.
- A baseline mammogram at the age of 35.
- From the age of 40, an annual mammogram.
- Breast ultrasound screening.
