CORFU. "The structure of our nation and society is threatened by criminality. When these children are adopted by same-sex couples, what will be the psychology of these individuals?"

Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos, and the Diapontia Islands, spoke on television on Monday morning regarding the hot issue of marriage and the adoption of children by same-sex couples. He went so far as to argue that if same-sex couples adopt children, crime will increase.

"The Church accepts all sinners when people are in repentance, not just homosexuals. All passions. But for the Church to bless or agree with the laws of adoption or all the other things that not only dissolve the family but also the social structure of our nation, the Church does not agree. And let me tell you, our nation is not like all other countries. Our country consists of Greeks, Orthodox Christians, and those who vote for MPs from the regions are not those with particular features, but all Orthodox Christians vote for them.

"It's the majority of the voters. You understand, when these MPs vote for laws that go against our Orthodox faith, what the reaction of the Church's people will be. We love them all, and our MPs, but when the social structure of our place deviates, from there onwards, it is a disappointment and sadness for us. And I cannot understand why Greece is rushing so quickly to enter this framework. Not all European countries have done it. We are in a hurry. We say yes to the EU but also yes to our nation and our principles," he told the Action24 channel.

He added:

"In no way are we asking to legislate ourselves, nor do we interfere with the work of the State. We simply ask for respect for coexistence. I cannot tell the faithful that there is the natural family and also the family resulting from deviation. Every day we see that the structure of our nation and society is threatened by criminality. When these children – as reputable scientists say – are adopted by same-sex couples, what will be the psychology of these individuals? You see children from broken families, from families that are not grounded in ethical principles... We have abandoned ethics, and we consider it progress to live without moral principles, without beliefs. Well, when people have no restraints, the new generation..."

Journalist: So, crime will increase?

"I believe so, yes. It's my belief and estimation. And scientific studies also say that," replied the Archbishop.
