Large number of people take part in 11th Korissos run on sand
CORFU. People΄s great response and participation makes it one of the most successful events of recent years.
The organisers were happy with the success of the 11th Korissos run on sand as were the runners, walkers and spectators.
Korissos Environmental, Cultural & Sports Society President Nikos Perros said: "We were particularly happy with people's great response and participation in the 11th Korissos run on sand this year because this makes it one of the most successful events of recent years. We are happy for the organisational success because such a sporting event has of course many requirements. Many people contributed to this, some as representatives of associations and others as individuals, including the Corfu branch of the Red Cross, the Alexandros Mastoras Clinic, the Hellenic Rescue Team and Mrs. Christina Tsirigaki with her herbalife isotonic drinks".
He then went on to say that "all those who participated showed with their presence the local community's determination, not only for Issos but also for the whole ecosystem that includes Limni, Halikounas and Laoudia, to reach far into the future, to future generations".
The award ceremony began with a moving reference to Sotiris Gasteratos, one of the founders of Korissos who recently passed away. Stamatis Ginis was honoured for his long-lasting contribution to the environment and especially to Issos.
The organising committee thanked all the co-organisers - the Ionian Islands Regional Authority, the local branch of the Hellenic Amateur Athletic Association (SEGAS), 'Diaplus', Corfu 'Victor' Union of Former Athletes (SEVAS), Corfu Gymnastics Association, 'Laodamas' and the Corfu branch of the National Youth Committee (ESYN) and dozens of local businesses that contributed in kind. There was a special mention for the volunteers from the Cultural Societies in Agios Mathaios, Vraganiotika, Chlomos and Argyrades as well as the Argyrades Agricultural Cooperative. Lefkimmi FC was also present.
It is also worth mentioning the kind gesture of the research writer Giorgos Sourtzinos, who gave two of his latest books to the winners.
The following were also thanked for their contribution to the organisation of the event: Hellenic Rescue Team, the local branch of the Red Cross, Environmental Protection Association, 'Alexandros Mastoras' Clinic, Dr. Alexandros Kavadias, and the Olivar Hotel and Apollon Palace Hotels.
All the participants were given free race shirts, medals, caps and special Issos cups.
A beach handball tournament was also held by the Corfu Gymnastics Association staff.
