CORFU. At 17:00 on Saturday 24 September Korissos will be organising beach handball and a 2k run for junior high school pupils.
The organisers were happy with the success of the 10th Korissos run on sand as were the runners, walkers and spectators.
Korissos Environmental, Cultural & Sports Society President Nikos Perros said: "The weather forecast was not very good but we know the area's microclimate and were confident that everything would go well, as it did. We were happy with the number of participants, especially the number of youngsters, which was the largest in recent years. We are now thinking about dividing the primary school pupils into age categories to give even greater emphasis to the youngsters taking part in this event in beautiful Issos."
"This will help them grow to love this beautiful area," he added, "in combination with this sporting event!"
The award ceremony began with a moving reference to the late Sotiris Gasteratos and a 'Korissos' medal was presented to his widow in honour of their years of participation and their contribution to the conservation and promotion of the Issos area.
The organising committee thanked all the co-organisers - the Ionian Islands Regional Authority, South Corfu Municipality, the local branch of the Hellenic Amateur Athletic Association (SEGAS), 'Diaplus', Corfu 'Victor' Union of Former Athletes (SEVAS), Corfu Gymnastics Association, 'Laodamas' and the Corfu branch of the National Youth Committee (ESYN).
The following were also thanked for their contribution to the organisation of the event: Hellenic Rescue Team, the local branch of the Red Cross, Environmental Protection Association, 'Alexandros Mastoras' Clinic, Dr. Alexandros Kavadias, and the Olivar Hotel and Apollon Palace Hotels. There was a special mention for the volunteers from the Cultural Societies in Agios Mathaios, Vraganiotika, Chlomos and Argyrades as well as the Argyrades Agricultural Cooperative.
All the participants were given free race shirts, medals, caps and special Issos cups.
