CORFU. Immediate actions from the Ministry of Culture and the Inspectorate of Antiquities.

Work to repair part of St. George΄s Church roof in the Old Fortress began just a few days after it was destroyed in the fire that broke out on Monday due to being struck by lightning.

Approximately 70 sq.m. of the 500 sq.m. of the historic building's roof was destroyed in the fire that broke out in the afternoon.

The fire was difficult to put out as there weren't suitable ladders for the 15m high roof, but the Fire Department and Civil Protection Service had been attempting to put it out for several hours with bucket trucks.

Artifacts and other historical items, which were part of the Konstantinos Theotokis exhibition, were immediately removed.

Stefanos Gikas

The candidate ND MP Stefanos Gikas published photos from the work and stated the following: "After coordinated actions of the Ministry of Culture and the Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities, the contractor was set up quickly and the repair of St. George΄s Church roof began today.

I would like to thank the General Secretary of Culture Giorgos Didaskalos and the Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities for their immediate actions for the repair of St. George's Church. In addition to repairing the roof, the fire detection and protection systems will be checked and a lightning rod will be placed.

If everything goes smoothly, St. George's Church in the Old Fortress will open again to the public very soon."
