CORFU. Yanis Varoufakis spoke to the public on Sunday 7 May and outlined his party΄s positions ahead of the elections on 21st May.
The leader of the MeRA25 party Yianis Varoufakis spoke to the public in St. Spyridon Square (Plakada) on Sunday 5 May and outlined his party's positions ahead of the elections on 21st May. Present at his speech were the Corfu party's candidate MPs Evangelia Alexaki, Spyros Armeniakos, Vassilis Kavvadias, Angelina Kontini, Iosif Georgatos and Sophia Sakorafa.
Giorgos Raidestinos opened the event, representing the Election Committee of the island and made a reference to all the local struggles from mining to waste, which have united all those who have joined MERA25 on a local level.
Then, Sophia Sakorafa called on people to join the struggle in order to prove that everything can be different with a stronger MeRA25 in the next Parliament.
Yanis Varoufakis referred to Kyriakos Mitsotakis' pre-election rhetoric, stating: "Mr. Mitsotakis' audacity is leaving us speechless. He is asking us to praise them for 'foreign direct investments'. What foreign investments? The non-performing loans, the privatisations, the power exchange - all these things that impoverish and bankrupt the country and the people". He also added the following: "We are a state potentially under occupation. The management of the country's taxation and public wealth has been passed on to the creditors, while those who claim that we are out of the memoranda are talking about closing the banks. If their huge lie is revealed, the whole post-memonetary narrative on which ND, SYRIZA and PASOK have based their policy will collapse. That's why they are going crazy with MeRA25 which they see destroying what they have based their lies on since 2015."
The leader of the MeRA25 party also talked about the issue of mining that threatens the Ionian Sea: "Apart from the fact that it is environmentally unacceptable to discuss hydrocarbon extraction in the midst of a climate disaster, it is also completely meaningless economically. By the time mining starts, the world will have switched to other forms of energy. But even if oil comes out, we won't see any money. All of them will be taken by the multinational companies and the Greek state will get 11% of the profits, which officially will be 0, so 0 euros for the Greek state. No mining!"
Finally, he attacked the ND and SYRIZA parties regarding the field of economy, but also the handling of the recent issue created by the amendment submitted by ND on 2 February about Mr. Kasidiaris' party, saying that such amendments cripple democracy.
