CORFU. Epitaphios processions at all the churches and in all the villages on the island.
Easter begins in Corfu on Good Friday afternoon with thousands of people watching and following Epitaphios processions throughout the island.
All the churches in Corfu Town organise the order in which their processions will take place with musicians, choirs, schools, scouts and others all taking part.
From early in the aftenoon the church choirs, especially that of the Metropolitan Church, as well as the Municipal Choir solemnly chant the Eulogies whilst the philharmonic (brass) bands play classical works such as Albinoni’s Adagio from the ‘Old’ Corfu Philharmonic Society, Verdi’s Marcia Funebre from ‘Mantzaros’ Philharmonic Society (Blue) along with Mariani’s funereal elegy Sventura and Chopin’s Funeral March from the ‘Capodistrias’ Philharmonic Society.
