CORFU. The religious ceremony was established in 1629, in commemoration of the island’s salvation from the plague, and since then it has been repeated every year on the same day.

In Corfu Town, the revered annual procession of Saint Spyridon’s Holy Relics took place today with full ceremony, marking the longest route and celebration of the year.

The procession began immediately after the Divine Liturgy at the Saint’s Church, with the parade moving along the old city walls. This particular religious ceremony was established in 1629, in commemoration of the island’s salvation from the plague, and since then it has been repeated every year on the same day.

The procession was led by the Archbishop of Corfu, Nektarios, and included the participation of the island’s philharmonic bands, the town’s schools, scout and guide groups, social organisations, as well as the local civil and military authorities.

The historic centre of Corfu Town was flooded with thousands of worshippers, residents, and visitors, who watched the procession with reverence. Today marks the official beginning of Holy Week celebrations on the island.
