CORFU. Food distributions to those eligible will take place next week in Corfu and Zakynthos, followed by the other islands

The long-awaited food distribution is starting again in the Ionian Islands with a delay of more than a year. The contract for the project was signed yesterday by the Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa and the contractor, in the presence of the Deputy Regional Governors Kostas Zorbas and Melita Andrioti.

The distributions of food and basic necessities to those eligible for the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD) will take place on 18, 19 and 20 January in Corfu and Zakynthos, followed by the other islands. The project has a total budget of €1,814,860.

Following the modifications made to upgrade the programme, items such as baby food, diapers and school supplies will also be distributed, while there will be the possibility to buy fresh products from local businesses on the island.

2,000 families

The aim of the programme is to help vulnerable households that cannot cope with the price increases and the economic crisis.

"There are 2,000 families at the moment facing a serious survival problem. We have upgraded this programme, enriched it and added at least 10 more items than the previous FEAD," said Melita Andrioti. The food distributions, which were delayed for more than a year due to preliminary appeals that stopped the Region's tender, will be carried out until 30 June 2023. However, it was pointed out that there is information that the programme has been extended until 30 September.

"Our intention is to claim a funding in order to extend them too," Mrs. Andrioti explained.

Those eligible will be notified immediately for the start of the distributions.

Vouchers

For the first time, however, a new action will also be developed as part of FEAD's accompanying projects. Specifically, vouchers for children aged 5-14 years, as well as some high school children, will be distributed, with which they will be able to participate in supportive extracurricular courses, language learning, creative and sports activities and speech therapy. This, however, also requires a tender process to select a provider for these services.
