CORFU. One of the issues discussed was the creation of a square in memory of the great Greek explorer and physician Panayiotis Potagos.

North Corfu Municipality's first popular assembly took place on Sunday 4 December at the Nymphes Cultural Society without the expected turnout, where the problems that the area is facing were discussed.

The North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris, the Deputy Mayor Spyridoula Kokkali, the Municipal Councillor Ioannis Kaloudis, the leader of the Laiki Sispirosi party Kostas Roussinos and the Municipal Councillor Vartholomaios Banos were present at the meeting.

The discussion focused on four main issues - two of them concerning roadworks and the others were the repair of the community office's roof, as well as the creation of a square that will bear the name of the great Greek explorer and physician Panayiotis Potagos.

Road surfacing

The surfacing of the rural road leading from Platonas to Roda has not been completed except for some small sections, as funding for the payment of the contractor has stopped. "It is a project included in the ESPA Programme of the former Corfu Municipality, which has been transferred to the Central Corfu Municipality. We have been waiting for this project since 1990. Some parts were done before 2010. There was never asphalt but only small sections that had been surfaced", the President of the local Nymphes Community Council Marios Koustas told Enimerosi.

He also said that the road leading to the famous Nymphes waterfalls should be resurfaced, due to its serious damage, which makes it difficult for vehicles to pass the road.

Roof repair

Another issue discussed at the meeting was the repair of the community office's roof. The local surgery has also been housed in the same building for over 40 years. Although there is a €25,000 fund secured from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the money is not enough to remove the old roof and put up a new one. An increase in the Municipality's budget is required, which as Mr. Koustas explained is already being taken care of.

According to the local councillor Eleni Xanthou, the local surgery also needs general repairs, such as painting, new doors and windows, as well as privacy of operation.

Panayiotis Potagos Square

Finally, the creation of a square that will bear the name of the great Greek explorer and physician Panayiotis Potagos was also discussed, as he died in 1903 in Nymphes, where he is buried.

In fact, a plot of about 150 sq.m. was purchased in 2005 by the former Thinalia Mayor Spyridon Varelis for this purpose under the Church of Panayia, where the explorer's tomb is located. The project will be put out to tender and will be carried out by the Municipality.
