CORFU. According to an announcement by the municipal authority, Kostas Mahimaris provided the solution for North Corfu Municipality΄s indoor training centre.

Kostas Mahimaris, a businessman in Acharavi, made a conscious and symbolic move. He donated a plot of land he owns in Roda, Karousades, to the North Corfu Municipality for the construction of an indoor training centre, which meets the specifications, while all studies show that it is the most suitable one for the entire North Corfu Municipality.

The announcement was made at the North Corfu Municipal Council meeting on 29 November, where the donor himself analysed the reason for doing this.

Amongst other things he said the following:

"I have always wanted to leave something for my town, something that will last and will be used by the young people. My involvement in sports as an excecutive for many years in Thinaliaos team taught me that only with adequate and decent infrastructure can any sport develop.

As you all know, this is not the first time I have contributed to the community. It has been my constant concern to contribute to associations, foundations (such as the Smile of the Child) and other bodies. All my contributions over the years are greater than this one. Many of you are questioning the location of the plot and argue that another cheaper plot could be found to be purchased or donated. I am not questioning it. It certainly could. I could also personally offer another plot in another location that would be more advantageous to me. But since most of us have been businesspeople all our lives, we know that you get what you pay for. Location plays an important role in what we want to create, especially if we are talking about a public project that will cover the needs of citizens in Nisaki, Pagi and Avliotes.

Why did I do it?

Our town is small. You all know me. You know my ethics, my character and the respect I have for everyone who honours me and trusts my business, everyone who helps me keep doing all that. So at 72, I wish to give back to the community that has honoured and trusted me for so many years. But I am saddened that many - even my friends - have questioned my intentions and believed that I was looking for ways to benefit myself. What do they have to say to me now? Not all of us are servants of money, not every move is for financial or political gain. Some of us - incredible as it may seem to some - simply love our town, and we want it to progress, we want a better future for our children and grandchildren.

And of course I know and I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thinks that way. I am also sure that my children, and especially my grandchildren, will be happy. They will say with pride that their grandfather contributed to this indoor training centre.

Finally - always emotional about what is going on around me and fully aware that I am living the rest of my life - I am telling you that I have tasted the greatest joys in giving and not in receiving. I understood very well that those who take are filling their pockets, but the ones who give are feeding their soul.

My brother Yiannis, I am sure that you will make our common dream real. Go forward with strength, strength given to you by the thought that this project is an investment in the future of our town for our young people who deserve much more than we give them.

All projects are important and serve the citizens. But more important are those that address the young people, so let us give and deliver the best we can to them.

North Corfu's Municipal Authority is constantly alert so that new projects that improve the daily life of our fellow citizens become reality and enjoy them all. We continue."
