CORFU. Konstantina Skolariki was selected to be one of the 200 researchers from around the world taking part in the Heidelberg forum.

A young Corfu researcher was selected to be one of the 200 researchers from around coming together for a week of scientific networking at the Heidelberg forum, which has been held every year since 2013.

The Heidelberg Laureate Forum, an annual event in the eponymous German town, welcomed young researchers again this year - 100 in Computer Science and 100 in Mathematics - including young Corfiot Konstantina Skolariki.

Despite the fact that she is only 25, her rich CV attracted the attention of the selection committee, who selected her to come and have the opportunity to interact with laureates of the disciplines: recipients of the Abel Prize, ACM A.M. Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal, IMU Abacus Medal and Nevanlinna Prize.

Collaboration opportunities

The aim of the organisers is to give young researchers the opportunity to interact with laureates in the fields of mathematics and computer science, exchange ideas and experiences and take advantage of collaboration opportunities.

25-year-old Konstantina was also chosen last year to take part in the Heidelberg Laureate Forum but due to the pandemic the forum took place online. This year, however, she will attend the forum physically along with leading researchers.

"It's a unique opportunity to speak with someone who has been focussed on studies and research for 50 years," the young researcher told Enimerosi from Heidelberg. "To learn how they got where they are today - the failures they overcame and the successful path that has brought them to where they are today."

Konstantina studied Biomedical Science in the UK and in 2018 did her postgraduate degree in Neurosciences at Edinburgh University. At the moment she is doing her PhD at the Bioinformatics and Human Electrophysiology Lab of the Ionian University Department of Informatics, headed by Professor Panayiotis Vlamos.

Her research focusses on the combination of mathematics and biology in modelling post-traumatic stress and is one of the top 20 researchers. She was chosen to take part in the forum based on being awarded the SAP scholarship grant, which is given to the best 20 young researchers - 10% of those taking part in the Heidelberg Laureate Forum. SAP is an academic partner of the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation.

"The scholarship came as a surprise as I hadn't applied for it," Konstantina says. "They informed me by e-mail that, based on my CV, I had been included in the top 20 young researchers whi were being awarded a scholarship."

The forum ends on 23 September.
