CORFU. Three new schools in Central, North and South Corfu. Teachers and books are all ready for the new school year.

There are just a few days left before the new school year begins. Despite some new measures, such as the all-day schools (with lessons ending at 17:30 instead of 16:00), there will again be pupils taking lessons in prefab and rented buildings this year.

School buildings in the centre of town still remains one of the main issues and especially for pre-school education for which there is a serious lack of buildings.

According to the teachers' union SEPE, pupils at the 12th Nursery and Mantouki Nursery will again be accommodated in prefab buildings that have been set up in the yard of the Corfu High Schools. The local authority has also rented two properties next to the 9th Nursery (Al. Panagouli St.) in Capotsinous to accommodate 4-6-year-old children from Mantouki!

"The political planning of the worst local authority with regard to education," Corfu SEPE President Antonis Koursaris told Enimerosi. "It doesn't have a real plan to solve the problem of school accommodation in the town centre. The scandalous rental of two properties next to the 9th Nursery does not solve the problem of the young children from Mantouki - it's not even in their neighbourhood - and it hasn't been approved by Suitability Committee with regard to work that needs to be done to ensure the safety of pupils."

Three new schools

There will be three new schools opening this year in Central, North and South Corfu - Corfu 4th High School, Corfu 2nd Special Primary School in Velonades and the Vraganiotika school unit.

"In just two years North Corfu Municipality has completed the renovation work at the old primary school in Velonades and is handing over a model school for the 2nd Special Primary School and Nursery," said Mr. Koursaris. "The local community has taken to it and we are happy to see the opening of this modern school facility."

Ionian Islands Regional Director of Education Petros Aggelopoulos told Enimerosi that significant building repair work has taken place throughout the island and is expected that the work will have been completed by the beginning of the new school year. Even if some work needs to continue, it won't disturb classes.

545 teachers appointed in Corfu

According to Mr. Aggelopoulos, the number of teachers this year is the highest following the recruitment that has been happening over the last few years. "In many cases we have over 95% of the teachers required," he said. "The small number of vacancies remaining is due to transfers, leave and people not taking up their positions. It is a very positive start to the school year - teachers and all the books are ready."

545 teachers have been appointed in Corfu - 371 in primary schools and 174 in secondary schools.

According to Corfu SEPE, despite the large number of permanent appointments, there still remain a lot of vacancies especially in special education and supply teachers.
