CORFU. The Ministry for Infrastructure and Transport intends to fund the Ionian Islands Region with €1 million for the maturation of the study for the North and South Corfu road, the implementation of which is a long-standing demand of the local community.
The Infrastructure Minister Kostas Karamanlis clarified that although the project is not within his responsibility, he is willing to cover the €1 million funding gap, in order for the Ionian Islands Region to update the studies.
“There is a funding gap of almost €1 million and I promise that I can give this money to the Region immediately so that the study can begin and when it is mature, we can see where we can find the money. But we cannot make a specific announcement at this moment or commit ourselves by giving false hope that this project will start tomorrow. It will not start tomorrow because it is not fully mature. The Region needs some funds, we are here to help with that,” said Mr. Karamanlis, stating that the project will provide a solution to the issue of road infrastructure on the island.
For this particular project, however, there was extensive discussion at the meeting held earlier in the Ionian Islands Regional Administration Headquarters in Alykes with the local authorities and bodies.
