CORFU. The number of our fellow humans that are in need of a hot meal remains high.
The Social Cooperative ‘New Horizons’ is receiving 50% less donations of food and other items to be distributed to our fellow citizens in need from individuals and businesses.
The managing director of the Social Cooperative Thanasis Papavlassopoulos said that due to the energy crisis, the increase in prices of products and the war in Ukraine, there is a drastic reduction in donations of food and hygiene items from individuals and businesses. As a result, there is difficulty in meeting the needs for the month of April.
212 families are receiving packages of food and hygiene items twice a month and another 140 individuals and families from throughout Corfu are receiving meals daily by the Community Shop & Food Kitchen.
It is worth noting that the community shop and the food kitchen in town were set up by the Central Corfu Municipality and the Social Cooperative ‘New Horizons’ with co-funding from Greece and the EU.
“There was a dramatic decrease in the number of citizens who helped with the packages placed in supermarkets, as well as the number of some businesses that offered food. This is the first time we are seeing a situation like this and it is worrying. For the last month and a half, we have had difficulty in collecting food, since the collection depends on donations. We no longer have stock for the community shop for next month, while we can only cover a part of the food kitchen based on the current situation. We barely got through March,” Mr. Papavlassopoulos told Enimerosi, adding that they will turn to their own resources to cover the needs.

Meanwhile, the number of our fellow humans that are in need of a hot meal and of support from social services and the church remains high.
There are three food kitchens (Mandrakina Church, Church of Saint Ioannis Lazos in Mandouki and Church of the Three Holy Martyrs in Anemomylos), which are offering food to 150 families everyday, while food packages are distributed daily to another 300 families by the Metropolitan Church’s four community shops.
North Corfu
Food packages are also distributed to 160 families in need in the North Corfu Municipality. As the Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection Theofanis Skembris said, this is quite a large number, considering that the Municipality has 18,000 residents in total.
“People started asking for help when the pandemic started. Since then, we have been facing a humanitarian crisis. We did not expect that there would be so many people asking for help,” he said and explained that, in the past, there were fewer people in need, but now, due to the general crisis, they have increased.
South Corfu
Finally, as far as South Corfu is concerned, according to the responsible Deputy Mayor Giorgos Sayias, the Municipality helps vulnerable groups following a request and submission of the necessary documents. Last year, financial assistance was given in eight cases, while this year only one application has been submitted so far.
