CORFU. There will be a discussion with the local community about which other schools can be transferred to the new building.

The Vraganiotika School Centre in Melitaion has finally been completed. According to the South Corfu Mayor Kostas Lessis, after months of waiting, the Central Corfu Technical Services handed over the new school centre to the South Corfu Technical Services, while the required checks were also made. At the same time, the tender process for the supply of equipment for the school's operation has started from 1 December 2021.

At first, the 86 primary school pupils of the Melitaion School Centre, which is located directly opposite the new school centre, are expected to be transferred to the latter. The new two-storey building, however, can accommodate more than 150 pupils.

Although the possibility of creating a special school there as well was initially raised, the proposal was eventually rejected by the Ministry of Education – for this year at least.

Full agreement

Mayor Kostas Lessis stated, however, that there will first be a dialogue with the parents and the local community, so that everyone agrees on which other schools can be transferred there. Deputy Mayor for Education Giorgos Sayias explained that this is an initiative of the Municipal Authority. He clarified, however, that the recommendation for transferring the schools in the new building will come from the Corfu Primary Education Department and the Ionian Islands Regional Education Department, which will then be discussed with the local community.

He also clarified that schools that are not facing any problems, will not be transferred and the transfers of pupils will aim to not cause trouble to their families.

However, according to the Corfu Primary Education Department, there is currently no other planning, apart from the one for the transfer of the Melitaion School Centre pupils.

Complete opposition

However, SEPE (Primary School Teachers’ Union), through its President Antonis Koursaris, expressed its complete opposition to any such action. “We completely disagree with this thought, because local communities are being downgraded and schools like the ones in Gravas are being created, with many students and crowded classrooms,” said the Union’s President.
