CORFU. The local ND organisation DEEP brought the issue of the creation of a Destination Management Organisation (DMO) that has been discussed for several years in Corfu back on the table, as it has been repeatedly recognised and promoted by all tourism organisations as an important need.
It should be reminded that the same issue had been discussed during the 2nd Corfu Tourism Conference αείForum in October 2018 and the Municipality had agreed to take this initiative. In fact, the local travel agents' association (AOCTA) and the Hellenic Association of Travel Agents (FedHATTA) had signed a memorandum of cooperation. The Municipality of Corfu was also included as was the Ionian University. It was considered a positive first step, but since then there has been no further development.
The local ND organisation DEEP, through the Tourism Committee, organised today a series of meetings with Corfu's tourism organisations. The purpose of the meetings is to formulate a strategy that will lay the foundations for the sustainable creation of the DMO, which Corfu will be called upon to implement in the near future.
The DEEP organisation stated that “Today's meeting with the President of AOCTA Spyros Halikiopoulos showed that we have similar views on the future, while there was an agreement on the targeted actions to be taken by all (local authorities and organisations), in order to upgrade Corfu as a tourist destination and become a pioneer of the tourism industry in Greece.
DEEP recorded AOCTA’s proposals, which will be processed by the Tourism Committee and the latter will make proposals for their implementation, as part of the integrated strategic plan for tourism development, which will be the local ND organisation DEEP's proposal for the long-term prosperity of Corfu.
DEEP Vice-President Andreas Merianos stressed that this initiative highlights the enhanced role that DEEP wishes to play in the island’s local and business community.
Stefanos Dimoulis expressed his satisfaction for the meeting and stressed that one of the topics on which there is full agreement of views with AOCTA and which is of major importance for DEEP, is the harmonious cooperation between the local authorities and the private sector, in order to implement plans”.
